My Story. My name is Brittanie Nicole Register Love. I was born on October 29, 1994. My adoption process began when I was three years old, and was not completed till I had turned four. I was given up for adoption by my biological parents, Kevin and Audrey Register. My biological grandparents legally adopted me, and became parents to me. Being adopted is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. The home I was being raised in, prior to the age of four, was not a healthy one. My biological parents had substance abuse and mental health issues, and it was not a safe environment for a toddler. I would often visit my grandparents, and they began to take care of me more often than not. In my original home, there were often tragic accidents. The ones I remember involved my hair being caught on fire and having to get stitches in my chin from a shopping cart accident. Things were never normal in the household. By no means am I saying that being adopted has changed me into being perfect. My parents are crazy, but in a good way. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t been adopted. I look at my younger half brother and sister who still live with my biological mother and I feel pity for them. They will never have the opportunities that being adopted has given me. Adoption also has caused some struggles for me, such as anxiety of not knowing why. I have always questioned why I was given up, and what I did to make them not want me. It has taken me eighteen years to realize they did it for me, not because of me. By giving me up for adoption, they were giving me a “second chance” at a better life. Adoption enabled me to become the person I am today, and I love who I am. I wouldn’t go back and change a single thing if I could. Adoption changes lives, and mine is merely one out of thousands who has been positively affected.
